Before we had our week at Pillsbury House Theatre, a flurry of activity at the studio, getting their shows ready. Not only completing puppets, but also rehearsing, here's some rehearsal pics: Annette setting up her shadow scenery before rehearsing. Darek and David rehearsing David's piece. Always love it when cohort folks support each other by being in each other's pieces! Johnathan figuring out actions for his main character. Monkeybear alum Liping Vong performed in Leyen Trang's piece. Here they are rehearsing the shadow segment. Johnathan performed in Alex Walton's piece, here they're problem solving a mechanism issue. Leyen Trang and Liping Vong (2019 cohort) rehearsing. Erica Warren practicing her shadow sequence. Love how this became a family affair! Darek's wife Angie puppeted his second character. More family! Erica Warren's brother and sister performed in her piece.

David working on a shadow scene for the overhead projector. Annette working on her opening shadow scene. Erica paper mache-ing her rod puppets. We had numerous group work sessions, everyone was able to give each other advice! Monkeybear alum Oanh Vu taught the cohort how to make a rough tabletop puppet. David learning how to sew, to put the hands on his puppet. Leyen experimenting with alcohol inks. Darek paper mache-ing a head. Love the pure joy folks have with their puppets!
The New Puppetworks cohort spent many months developing stories, making puppets and rehearsing. Our cohort included Johnathan Boyd, Annette Bryant, Darek DeLille, Leyen Trang, Alex Walton, David Wang and Erica Warren. Here's a few pics from their process:
Our Intensive is a free weeklong puppet performance workshop for Native, Black, IPOC. We train artists on the fundamentals of puppet performance (bringing a puppet to life) in numerous styles of puppetry, taught by Andrew Kim.
Was so awesome to get back to our regular in-person programming after the first few Covid years. Johnathan Boyd, Annette Bryant, Darek DeLille, Leyen Trang, Alex Walton, David Wang, Erica Warren, Izzy Alesna and Adja Gildersleve all did an amazing job jumping into their first experience with puppetry (Erica had some shadow puppetry experience before).
